Worn tyres are one of the most common reasons cars fail the NCT, and they make braking in the wet far longer. Checking takes less than a minute.
The legal minimum
In Ireland, car tyres must have at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tread, all the way around the tyre. Tyres below this are illegal, will fail the NCT and can lead to penalty points if you are stopped.
How to check your tread
- Tread wear indicators. Small raised bars sit in the main grooves. If the tread is level with them, the tyre is at 1.6mm and must be replaced.
- A tread depth gauge. Cheap to buy and the most accurate check.
- Check several points. Uneven wear is common, so measure the inside, middle and outside of each tyre.
Why 1.6mm is too late
Tyres lose a lot of wet grip well before the legal limit. On Irish roads, where it rains often, many safety experts recommend replacing at around 3mm. The difference in stopping distance on a wet road can be several car lengths.
Signs you need new tyres now
- Tread at or near the wear indicators.
- Uneven wear on one edge, which can point to tracking problems.
- Cracks, bulges or cords showing.
- The car feels less stable in the wet.
