Part-worn tyres can save you money and get you moving fast. A good one is a smart buy, a bad one is a risk. Here is how to tell the difference.
A part-worn tyre is a used tyre with tread left on it. Bought from someone who checks them properly, it is a sensible low-cost option, especially when you need to get back on the road today.
The five checks that matter
- Tread depth. The legal minimum in Ireland is 1.6mm, but a part-worn tyre should have plenty more. Aim for at least 3mm to 4mm, evenly across the tyre.
- Age. Look for the four-digit DOT code on the sidewall, for example 2421, meaning week 24 of 2021. Rubber hardens with age, so avoid very old tyres even if the tread looks good.
- Damage. No cuts, bulges, cracks or exposed cords, inside or out.
- Repairs. Any previous repair should be a proper inside patch in the central tread area.
- The right size and rating. Size, load index and speed rating must match what your car needs. See how to read your tyre size.
When part-worn makes sense
- You need a tyre fast and do not want to wait for an order.
- You are replacing one tyre and want it to match the wear on the others.
- You are on a tight budget and the tyre passes every check above.
