A slow puncture is easy to ignore until it leaves you with a flat at the worst moment. Spot it early and it is usually a quick, cheap repair.
Common signs
- One tyre looks lower than the others, especially first thing in the morning.
- You keep topping up the same tyre every few days.
- Your tyre pressure warning light comes on.
- The car pulls slightly to one side or the steering feels heavy.
- Fuel economy drops for no obvious reason.
What causes a slow puncture
- A small nail or screw still sitting in the tread.
- A leaking or cracked valve.
- Corrosion where the tyre meets the alloy wheel (a bead leak).
- Damage from hitting a pothole or kerb.
Why not just keep topping it up?
Driving on an under-inflated tyre overheats the sidewall and wears the tyre unevenly. It can also turn a simple repair into a tyre that has to be replaced. And a slow leak can become a fast one on the motorway.
