Ireland rarely gets deep snow, but cold, wet roads are common for much of the year. That makes tyre choice more important than many drivers think.
The three types
- Summer tyres are what most cars in Ireland come with. They grip well in mild conditions, but the rubber hardens below about 7°C.
- Winter tyres use softer rubber and deeper grooves for cold, wet, icy or snowy roads. They wear faster in warm weather.
- All-season tyres sit in between, with good grip across a wider range of temperatures. Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol.
What suits Irish weather
For most drivers in Dublin and the surrounding counties, a good all-season tyre is a sensible choice: no need to swap tyres twice a year, and better cold-weather grip than a summer tyre. If you drive a lot in the hills of Wicklow or rural Meath and Kildare in winter, dedicated winter tyres can be worth it.
Whatever you choose
- Keep at least 3mm of tread for wet grip. See the legal tread depth rules.
- Check pressures more often in cold weather.
- Fit matching tyres on each axle.
